“Nothing beats MWC in person, and it was exciting to bring our community – which is so passionate about connectivity – back together to discuss the opportunities that lie ahead.” John Hoffman, CEO GSMA Ltd. said. “On behalf of the GSMA, I would like to thank all of our attendees, exhibitors, sponsors, and partners who came together to make MWC22 so productive, safe, and successful. I also want to thank Barcelona City Council, Generalitat de Catalunya, the Ministry of Economy and Digital Transformation, Fira de Barcelona, Tourism de Barcelona (the Host City Parties), the L’Hospitalet de Llobregat, Mobile World Capital, and the people of Catalonia and Spain. Your support is unwavering, and your creativity, hospitality, and perseverance continually inspire us.”

Connectivity Unleashed

Over four days, more than 1,900 companies joined MWC22 Barcelona to showcase the role of mobile technology in unleashing connectivity, exploring 5G Connect sponsored by Salesforce, Advancing AI, Internet of Everything, CloudNet by Kyndryl, FinTech, and the Tech Horizon.

Thought leadership from entrepreneurs, government ministers, and extraordinary people pushing the boundaries of our imaginations spoke from stages across the event. From traditional industries to award-winning filmmakers speakers challenged and inspired attendees to think about new ways of leveraging technology.

Vertical collaboration, startup innovation, and much more at MWC22

Again this year, the Ministerial Programme at MWC was the centre of global digital policy debate. With more than 160 delegations from countries and international institutions around the world, policymakers, regulators, industry leaders, and the international development community exchanged experiences and views on how to build policies for a digital world, maximise the potential of 5G, close the digital gap, and meet global climate targets. As the world becomes increasingly digital, there was broad agreement that we need more collaboration and cooperation amongst all stakeholders to expand digital inclusion for all. This year, leaders like Jessica Rosenworcel, Chairwoman of the U.S. FCC, and Minister Paula Ingabire of Rwanda not only contributed to the conversation in the Ministerial Programme, but brought their policy priorities to the MWC keynote stage.

All-new for this year’s edition, Industry City, co-delivered with Knowledge Partner Accenture showcased demos from the FinTech, Manufacturing, and Automotive sectors. With a buzz of activity, Industry City was a must-see space at the event. Visitors had the opportunity to experience a range of Summits covering robotics and smart mobility topics through interactive metaverse tours and demonstrations from partners and the GSMA Foundry programme.

Focus on the local entrepreneurial startup community returned with the 4YFN (Four Years from Now) programme – supported by platinum sponsor BStartup Banco Sabadell – as it welcomed over 500 international startups and over 300 speakers to share insights on how to drive the ecosystem forward. Competing for more than €24 billion of investment, 200 startups pitched to leading funds, VCs, and CVCs during the event.

MWC22 by the numbers

  • Over 61,000 unique people attended in person
  • Around 500,000 unique virtual and daily viewers on MWC22 and partner platforms
  • Representation from almost 200 countries and territories
  • Over 1,900 exhibitors, sponsors, and partners
  • Over 1,000 speakers, 97% in person and 36% women
  • More than 50% of attendees were Directors and C-Suite executives, 20% were CEOs and founders, 25% were women
  • Millions tuned into MWC22 Barcelona content via Mobile World Live global syndication and official national and international broadcasters.
  • More than 1,600 international journalists were onsite

Our gratitude

“The momentum leading into MWC22 was palpable, and it delivered,” said Mats Granryd, Director General, GSMA. “In the spirit of our theme ‘Connectivity Unleashed’, we saw how industries were going beyond simple connectivity to deliver meaningful connectivity, deploying technology in ground-breaking ways that will shape industry and society. I thank every person who helped make MWC Barcelona 2022 an unmissable event – and as we move to a ‘digital everything’ world, I look forward to seeing what we achieve next year!”

MWC22 was covered by Mobile World Live, CNBC, Euronews, Financial Times, TIME, The Wall Street Journal Barron’s Group, and more than 1,600 international journalists. Featured Media Partners include C114, Insider Intelligence, Radio + Television Business Report, Technology Record, and TeleSemana. A huge thank you to all our MWC22 partners and sponsors. Your collaboration and support contributed significantly to the buzz and excitement of being together at this time.

Local initiatives like, Meet and Eat and Beat Barcelona showcased the best of the city. A preliminary economic analysis indicated that MWC will have contributed more than €240 million to Barcelona’s economy and created more than 6,700 part-time jobs in 2022. And once again, MWC was a carbon-neutral event.

Looking to the future

Following a successful MWC22 Barcelona, the GSMA is working hard to deliver the full MWC series in 2022. The next event, MWC Shanghai, will take place from 29th June – 1st July, followed by the inaugural MWC Las Vegas from 28th-30th September and rounded off by MWC Africa from 25-27th October – which will return in person to Kigali for the first time since 2019.

As the mobile industry gathered this week at MWC22, our thoughts have been with those suffering hardship and loss. Businesses, governments, and individuals alike are wrestling with meaningful ways to help, even as the conflict continues to escalate. Many of our members are responding by facilitating communication with loved ones and by addressing humanitarian needs.

Introducing Our Next-Generation Nuro

Introducing Our Next-Generation Nuro

We’ve always known that solving last-mile delivery through robotics would better everyday life for millions of people. Designing the right autonomous vehicle to do that — and taking a zero-occupant approach to that design — has been a monumental task involving years of work and iterations built on real-world learning.

We wanted to get it right. We needed to make it safe, fully electric, and easy to operate. And we needed it to scale quickly so it could get to work. Finding the right balance between something we wanted in our own neighborhoods and something that could be produced at scale was no easy feat. But it was worth it.

Now, we’re thrilled to announce Nuro’s third-generation autonomous delivery vehicle. This new vehicle improves on our previous design and is ready to be produced at scale. Every detail is intentional, and now we’re ready to share some of the most impactful innovations of our new model.

Safety

Safety has been and always will be our top priority. In fact, it’s one of the core reasons Nuro was founded — we knew that reducing the number of car trips people take would enable us to keep more people safe. But we didn’t stop there: our third-generation vehicle is designed to be an asset to the roads on which it operates in a number of ways.

Size

Our new vehicle is approximately 20% smaller in width than average passenger cars. That significantly smaller footprint gives bicyclists and pedestrians more room to maneuver alongside the bot.

Airbag

A custom external pedestrian airbag across the front of the bot is optimized to reduce the force of impact and number of injuries in the event of collision.

Weather

Our next-generation vehicle is designed to safely operate in the same environment as all motor vehicles. That allows us to serve a wide variety of geographies that experience various weather conditions throughout the year.

Experience

The new vehicle was designed to feel like a friendly member of the community and to be fun to interact with. We designed the compartments to hold nearly everything and to keep individual orders separate and secure. And a beautiful, large touchscreen will allow us to design new and engaging curbside commerce experiences such as mobile marketplaces.

Compartments

Taking people out of our vehicles means we have more room for the good stuff. Our 27 ft3 compartments combined can fit about 24 bags of groceries and handle almost 500 lbs. Modular inserts that fit inside the compartments allow for heating and cooling, with a range of temps from 22ºF or hot to 116ºF, which means pizza stays warm and soda stays cool.

Speed

Our new model will be able to reach a top operating speed of 45mph, allowing the vehicle to reach more customers and serve more businesses on a wider variety of roads.

Emissions

Our vehicles are already completely battery-electric and emission-free, but we’ve decided to take our commitment to sustainability even further: in this new vehicle, we’re using 100% renewable electricity from wind farms in Texas to power our fleet and to reduce our overall carbon footprint. And all materials adhere to strict sourcing and supply chain standards meant to protect the natural environment.

Sensors

The new model contains a sophisticated network of sensors that work together to give an in-depth, 360º view of the world in which it operates.

In addition to being able to sense everything from the difference between a bundle of leaves and a pet to how many pedestrians are standing at a crosswalk in dense fog, the new model also has the ability to clean its own sensors. This self-cleaning is important to maintain operations and retain sensitivity throughout the day.

Security

We hold our security to the strictest standards. Our systems are safe to operate because they’re designed securely from the ground up. We engineer defensive and detection mechanisms into the system for early warning about potential attacks and ensure our safety margin is maintained in every conceivable scenario. Early detection throughout our system is continuously evaluated by an internal offensive security test and evaluation team that conducts penetration testing emulating highly funded and exceptionally skilled attacks.

That commitment to security extends to our customer data, which we prioritize even above our own intellectual data protections. Our privacy policy dictates everything from how we collect data to how we safeguard it, so that our customers have full transparency into the handling of their private data.

Manufacturing

In August, 2021, we announced our plans to build a manufacturing facility and test track in southern Nevada. These facilities will be crucial for bringing online the tens of thousands of vehicles we’ll need to be able to serve neighborhoods across the country. Pre-production is underway now, and we’re partnering with BYD North America — part of one of the largest OEM networks of electric vehicles in the world — to assemble globally sourced hardware components for the vehicle platforms.

Jobs

BYD will be able to leverage the manufacturing capacity of its Lancaster facility to support Nuro and bring more jobs to California. And we’ll be bringing more jobs to southern Nevada. In fact, our southern Nevada facilities are expected to create an initial 250 highly skilled career opportunities with long-term growth potential in the autonomous vehicle industry.

Why it matters

Our third-generation vehicle was purposefully designed to become a beloved member of the community — every community. When we set out to transform everyday lives through robotics, we placed great emphasis on equity: we didn’t want to only cater to specific neighborhoods or certain demographics. We wanted to unlock access to goods and services for millions of people around the world. It’s a vision we believe in.

This is the vehicle we’ll be producing at scale to better everyday life for millions, and we can’t wait for it to be on the road right outside your front door. Because, along with delivering nearly anything from local stores, it’s also delivering greater equity, safer communities, less pollution

MWC22 BARCELONA RUNS FROM 28 FEBRUARY – 3 MARCH 2022

MWC22 BARCELONA RUNS FROM 28 FEBRUARY – 3 MARCH 2022

At the outset of the pandemic, the mobile ecosystem demonstrated genuine leadership to keep vital lines of communication open. Two years later, as we learn to live with the virus, it is time for the industry to come together and collectively build a vision for a connected recovery.

Earlier this week, the GSMA made an informed statement confirming our intention to hold MWC22 Barcelona as planned. This moment demands responsible leadership. That means making difficult decisions and responding to everchanging circumstances, listening, and taking appropriate actions to protect and promote every member of this ecosystem.

Given the lengths that so many partners, large and small, have taken to reconvene and make MWC22 Barcelona a success, we remain on course to host the industry at Fira Gran Via on 28 February – 3 March. We do this with overwhelming support from the industry, our partners, Spain, Catalonia, Barcelona, and the Host City Parties. In fact, earlier this week, the first deputy mayor of Barcelona, Jaume Collboni confirmed the city’s “political, institutional and operational” support for MWC22 Barcelona.

We anticipate much speculation in the lead-up. Covid is a real concern, and unfortunately, in an environment with varied opinions and predictions about the near- and long-term impact, some exhibitors and attendees will be re-evaluating their plans for the event this year. Every year, we look forward to seeing our community come together, so we would be disappointed to miss any of you but understand and respect the decisions of our partners. The health and safety of staff, workers, exhibitors, visitors, suppliers, partners, and the local community remain our top priority. With three successful events in 2021, we have proven our ability to deliver a safe environment founded on our industry-leading health and safety plan, Committed Community.

This moment is our collective opportunity to showcase how the entire digital ecosystem continues to transform lives and significantly support global recovery with technology visionaries – against a backdrop of international recognition that connectivity has never been more critical.

Here’s Why CES 2022 in Las Vegas Will be for the Vaccinated

Here’s Why CES 2022 in Las Vegas Will be for the Vaccinated

As a CEO running a national trade association – the Consumer Technology Association (CTA) – these past 18 months put me on a roller coaster of emotion as I work to lead by example and make decisions that will have positive effects.

In July 2020, I led the decision process to cancel our live, in-person, CES and opt for a digital show instead.  This was a difficult choice because I knew it was going to have a negative effect on a lot of people. First, our staff – we had to downsize and lay off employees.  Second, the City of Las Vegas – they rely on events like CES to bring hundreds of millions of dollars to the city and fuel their local economy.  Canceling our in-person CES affected the hotels and the hospitality workers and the workers who welcome us each year and help us pull off the most influential tech gathering in the world! Third, the industry – tens of thousands each year gather at CES to see the latest innovation, to meet new business partners and to develop new ideas.

As difficult as that decision was, I knew it was the right one because with no vaccine available it simply was not safe to hold CES during a pandemic. Our only defense against COVID-19 at that time was to minimize contact with people, wash our hands and wear face masks. Canceling the in-person CES was the right thing to do – we wanted to do our part and not spread the disease.

Fast forward a year to August 2021. Vaccines are readily available in the United States and several other countries. More and more Americans are now fully vaccinated. However, as vaccines are making their way around the world, so is a new threat – the Delta variant.

We have seen a spike in cases due to the Delta variant, which is severely hurting the unvaccinated population. Yes, there are breakthrough cases for the vaccinated, but many of those have few or no symptoms at all. And of the vaccinated getting the Delta variant, only a tiny percentage are hospitalized.

We prioritize the safety and security of CES participants. Which is why, once again, my team has confronted a major decision: CES will be in person in Las Vegas in January 2022, and we will require all attendees to be fully vaccinated. We are also assessing proof of a positive antibody test as a requirement and will share more details on this later. Importantly, we will continue to follow state and local guidelines and recommendations by the CDC and will announce additional protocols as we get closer to the show.

We all play a role in stopping the spread – requiring proof of vaccination for CES 2022 is one way we can take responsibility on our part.

Many are clamoring to return to the serendipity and relationship-building of in-person events—so are we. CES is where business gets done. It’s an economic engine for our industry and an opportunity for companies from around the world, both large and small, to launch products, build brands and form partnerships. Tech has also evolved by leaps and bounds in the last year and a half—we need to convene and connect so we can maintain our momentum and continue to inspire innovative solutions for a rapidly changing world.

We know our decision to require vaccines—and potentially positive antibody tests—may not be popular for some, but for many others it will allow them to know they can experience CES once again—and get back to business as usual.

For those who cannot attend CES in person, we offer the CES experience through our digital platform and hope to welcome you back to Las Vegas in 2023. Regardless of how you choose to participate in CES 2022, I hope you find inspiration, make new connections, build your business and step into the rest of the year with a renewed sense of hope for how tech continues to improve all our lives.

HUAWEI – MATE X2 SMARTPHONE

HUAWEI – MATE X2 SMARTPHONE

It has a Leica-developed camera array, but that’s not the most interesting thing about Huawei’s Mate X2. Unlike its predecessor which had a screen that wrapped around the outside, it adopts a Samsung-like approach with a folding 8-inch screen on the interior and a 6.45-inch display on the front for use while closed. Around the back are the aforementioned cameras, including a 50-megapixel wide-angle, 16-megapixel ultra-wide, 12-megapixel 3x telephoto, and 8-megapixel 10x zoom.

Launch: When does the Huawei Mate X2 go on sale?
Huawei presented the Huawei Mate X2 this Monday, February 22, and announced that it would go on sale in China from the following Thursday, that is, on February 25, 2021.

As we have said, it is the launch aimed at the Chinese market and for now it is unknown when it will reach the West, or if it will do so directly. Although we have hope.

The launch of the Mate X was also restricted to China and never reached Europe or the United States. The upgraded version (the Huawei Mate Xs), which had a global launch in March 2020, did, however.

It’s powered by Huawei’s Kirin 9000 chip, will be upgraded to the company’s HarmonyOS in April (it ships with an Android variant), and has 8GB of RAM and up to 512GB of internal storage. It launches in China on February 25; no international release details have been announced.

Foldable Heritage
The category-defining Galaxy Fold began the foldable era. Now, Galaxy Z Flip is shaping it for a new decade. As the first device in the Z series, Galaxy Z Flip introduces a new device portfolio that reaffirms Samsung’s commitment to leading the category, and leveraging technologies and form factors to create foldable experiences that will surprise and delight in the years ahead.

  • Style that Fits in Your Pocket – Designed for ultimate portability, Galaxy Z Flip folds into the size of a wallet, so you can easily fit it in your pocket or bag. When closed, it is a stylish, compact palm-sized device. When opened, its screen size nearly doubles to reveal a stunning 6.7-inch display2. With its stylish color palette, sleek rounded corners and forward fold that closes with a satisfying snap, Galaxy Z Flip is sure to turn heads.
  • Samsung’s First Foldable Glass Display – Galaxy Z Flip features an Infinity Flex Display with Samsung’s proprietary bendable Ultra Thin Glass (UTG), making it slimmer with a sleek, premium look and feel that has never been seen with a foldable device before. The centered in-display camera cutout at the top also means there’s no notch and no distractions, with Samsung’s first-ever 21.9:9 ratio, so you can enjoy even more of your favorite content such as cinema-ratio 21:9 shows and movies.
  • New Hideaway Hinge – Galaxy Z Flip’s Hideaway Hinge is a work of engineering art. It’s backed by a dual CAM mechanism – small but sophisticatedly designed to ensure every flip and fold is smooth and stable. Galaxy Z Flip can stay open at a range of angles, like a laptop screen. The Hideaway Hinge system also integrates Samsung’s new sweeper technology, which uses nylon fibers crafted by micro-height-cutting technology to repel dirt and dust.

The Next Foldable Experience
Galaxy Z Flip is built for the modern, on-the-go lifestyle. Now you can do more, from multiple angles – hands-free. This unique foldable experience is unlike any other smartphone on the market today.

  • Do more – Hands-free – When Galaxy Z Flip unfolds, it can stay open at multiple angles, unlocking opportunities for selfies that show more of the world around you and expressive video chats with Google Duo – all hands-free.
  • Flex mode – Samsung worked closely with Google to design Flex mode – a custom-built user experience for Galaxy Z Flip’s unique forward folding form factor. When the device is free-standing, the display automatically splits into two 4-inch screens so you can easily view images, contents or videos on the top half of the display, and control them on the bottom half. Easily watch and navigate YouTube3 – stream on the top while searching for other videos, reading descriptions and writing comments on the bottom.
  • Game Changing Camera – Galaxy Z Flip literally stands on its own so that you can capture more, on-the-go – from timed group shots to vivid nighttime content. You can create content for your social media feeds from the best angle and enjoy video recording with a 16:9 ratio that’s perfect for uploads to social media platforms, hands-free – no tripod needed. Capture stunning Night Hyperlapse videos or vivid low light shots with Night mode – no flash needed. Just open your device and place it on a table. When closed, quickly capture one-handed high-quality selfies using the rear camera without unfolding.
  • Notifications on Your Terms – Whether Galaxy Z Flip is closed, standing upright or open, never miss a text, call or reminder. Realme’s X3 SuperZoom phone has a periscope camera and 120Hz display

Chinese smartphone maker Realme made a name for itself by selling fairly powerful phones at very low price points, but it never had a flagship that could really threaten the likes of Samsung and Huawei in Europe. That may change today.

Realme’s X3 SuperZoom phone has a periscope camera and 120Hz display

On Tuesday, the company launched a new phone called Realme X3 SuperZoom, a flagship that launches in Europe first and hits all the right spots for a price of €499 ($547/£447).

The phone is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 855+ processor, and comes with 8/12GB of RAM and 128/256GB of storage memory. Finally, it has a 4,200mAh battery with 30W speedy charging.

In terms of design, the Realme X3 SuperZoom doesn’t stray much from the norm — the display is near bezel-less, save for the slightly larger lower bezel, and on the back, the quad camera is located in a hefty, vertical camera bump on the top left. The phone is available in two colors: Arctic White and Glacier Blue.

While the Realme X3 SuperZoom doesn’t have the latest Snapdragon processor or a fancy OLED display, it offers a nice mix of premium features for a decent price. It is available for pre-order now on Realme’s website, and will start shipping in “early June.”

Samsung Galaxy Note 20 to be launched in August at online event, report says

Samsung Galaxy Note 20 to be launched in August at online event, report says

Samsung will launch its Galaxy Note 20 smartphone in August at an online-only event, marking the first time a Note series flagship launch won’t be held in a real-world venue.

This is according to the Korea Herald, which cites industry sources as saying that the company has made the decision to go online-only due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Samsung typically launches its Note series smartphones in New York City over the summer. Last year’s Note 10 and Note 10+ were launched on August 7, with thousands of people in attendance. Such an event may be hard or impossible to organize this summer, reportedly prompting Samsung to switch to an online-only event. In New York City, lockdown rules are still in place until at least June 13, with all large gatherings either canceled or postponed.

Samsung wouldn’t explicitly confirm this, but it told the Korea Herald that online hosting of events is “influential” and that the company has “various plans in mind.”

According to the outlet, the exact launch date for the Note 20 is still in flux — given there’s no need to organize a venue, Samsung may move the date to the most opportune time.

Besides the Note 20, Samsung is also likely to launch a larger phone, the Note 20+ at the same event, as well as a successor to its foldable phone, the Galaxy Fold.

Recent rumors indicate that the Galaxy Note 20 will have a 108-megapixel camera, as well as a Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 chipset.
